A blog has to have a catchy name. In considering a name for this site, I was looking for a symbol of endlessness.
I weighed a few options, but found them wanting. The sideways-eight “infinity” symbol has a silly-sounding name (“lemniscus”); the never-ending surface called a Möbius strip seems a more appropriate symbol for a discussion of topology in mathematics. Nope; nope.
And then I remembered the ancient symbol of a serpent devouring its own tail, the wyrm Ouroboros.
Apropos of the timelessness of questions about the nature of our mortality — and of the nagging prospect, familiar to any scientist, that one’s inquiries will prove futile — it seems perfect.
