Decline in immunological function can make older people more susceptible to both infection and cancer. Two recent papers describe detailed analyses of age-related changes within subtypes of B cells and T cells. Both papers exploit recent advances in identification and purification of specific subpopulations of lymphocytes, and both discuss age-related change in the context of homeostatic control of complex populations.
